"When a business involves itself in the community in ways beyond its commercial focus that business truly becomes an integral part of the community," said Woodland Chamber of Commerce president Terry Demmett as she announced the Chamber Business of the Quarter award Tuesday in Woodland.

"$ave-On-Food$, under the leadership of store manager Mike Schouten has proved over the last several years to be an outstanding supporter of the Woodland community and a most deserving recipient of this award."

Whether it was supplying, at the last moment, a large tent for a rain-threatened graduation ceremony, eggs for Easter egg hunts, support for school athletics or sweets for Mobile Meals, Mike Schouten and his staff could be counted on to support the cause quickly and cheerfully.

Some of the donations over the past several years include:
Woodland Public Schools, LaCenter Public Schools, Kalama Public Schools, Planter's Day Parade, Woodland Little League, Woodland soccer teams, Kalama Community Fair, Tempo of Woodland, Wodaege Group, Woodland Christian School, Swift - Forward Thrust, Little Rascal Preschool, Woodland and Yale Easter Egg Hunts, Woodland PTSA, Southwest Washington Anglers, Junior Achievement Woodland High School and Rotary.

Mike Schouten has been manager of the Woodland $ave-On-Food$ since 1994 and employed by its parent company Brown & Cole for the past 15 years. He and his wife, Kim, have two grown children and two grandchildren. Mike enjoys horseback riding, yard work/landscaping, participating in and watching most sports and spending time with his grandchildren. Save on Foods has been a long time member of the Woodland Chamber, with Mike serving cheerfully on many committees including the demanding Golf Committee.

"Mike and $ave-On-Food$ represents the best of the Woodland business community," concluded Demmett. "He and his staff are the reason Woodlanders support his store and continue to shop Woodland."
