CEMETERY CLEAN UP EVENT A SUCCESS

Ridgefield, WA, December 9, 2008 – Thirty volunteers including players, parents, Coach Gregg Ford, Coach Kent Landerholm and Coach Jared Hundley of the Ridgefield High School Basketball team conducted a clean up day on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the Ridgefield Cemetery. Volunteers gave up their Saturday morning to pick up leaves and debris in the cemetery. Approximately 2.5 acres of the Ridgefield Cemetery were raked and cleaned during the volunteer effort.
The idea for the students to learn the importance of community service came from the coaches and a few of the player’s parents. City staff was approached on ways the team might be able to help their community and the cemetery clean up day turned out to be a good match for the interest of the group.

"We were very pleased with such a great turnout of over 30 volunteers who braved the cold December morning to make a positive difference for their community. A number of our players went on to participate in Walk and Knock following the Ridgefield Cemetery cleanup."
Steve Wall, Public Works Director, who coordinated the event, said "It's events like this that really make Ridgefield a strong community. The Cemetery is a large area to maintain for a city of our size and we greatly appreciate the efforts made by the coaches, team members and their parents on behalf of the City of Ridgefield.""
The City of Ridgefield, incorporated in 1909, is a rapidly growing community located in northern Clark County, Washington approximately 10 miles north of Vancouver, Washington. Over the next 10 to 15 years, the City of Ridgefield expects to grow to a population of over 20,000 persons with an employment base of over 13,000 jobs. The City has adopted a Council-City Manager form of government.
