Overnight Trip From Woodland, WA
August 8 & 9, 2004

Leave Woodland by driving South on I-5. Turn off I-5 onto I-205 just pass the Clark County Fairgrounds. Proceed South over the Columbia River Bridge.(23.5 miles from Woodland). Move over into the right lane so you can take the Columbia River Gorge exit 22 to I-84. (Columbia River Highway). This drive is spectacular all the way up the gorge. At mile 50 you can park and take a few pictures of Multnomah Falls. Bonneville Dam is next at mile 59. Continuing on, you will pass through Cascade Locks. Exit 62, 80.7 miles from Woodland will take you to Hood River. It is 100 miles to The Dalles. Exit 88, at 107 miles is The Dalles Dam. Bypass the Deschutes River at mile 116.

At Biggs Junction, Dinty's Market is a good place to stop for supplies.

Cross over the Columbia River on Sam Hill Memorial Bridge.

Follow the signs to Maryhill Museum of Art.

Proceed to Stonehenge by following the signs.

Get back on Highway 97 and stay on this highway all the way to Yakima. There are really cool views of Mt. Adams from Highway 97. Drive on through Goldendale, the Toppenish Wildlife Refuge and Toppenish "The City of Murals." Yakima is approximately 210 miles from Woodland. There are several museums and other things to see and do in Yakima which prides itself on 300 days of sunshine per year. We visited Track 29 which is a group of old rail cars remodeled and used as shops restaurants etc. It is really outstanding. We stayed overnight in Yakima. We ate at the Olive Garden. Leave Yakima on Highway 12. There are many fruit stands along the way to the Tietan River. The river follows along the highway. Fly fishing only. There is one good fishing hole after the other, with easy access from the highway. Rimrock Reservoir is formed by the Rimrock Dam.

After driving past the Rimrock Reservoir start looking for a poorly marked Scenic View turn out to Upper Clear Creek and Lower Clear Creek Falls. It is 52.3 miles from Yakima. These falls are spectacular and the surrounding scenery is worth the stop even without the falls.

Next you will come to White Pass, elevation 4500 feet. This is a great ski area. The entire area is breathtaking with awesome views of Mt. Rainer.

Driving down from White Pass you will enter Packwood. Cruisers Pizza in Packwood is excellant. There are many fishing, hiking, and camping opportunities in the Packwood area. A person could easily spend two or three weeks here. We really liked Packwood.

Continue driving West from Packwood on Highway 12 you will come out on I-5 around Toledo. Then it is South on I-5 to Woodland. The entire trip was 435 miles and was a very pleasant experience.
