Rose pruning. - 2:28 p.m. 2/28/2009
Prune roses to a little above the knee in fall after blooming. I do mine in October. Then in the spring I give them the final pruning. A few inches to a foot from the ground. Severe pruning works best. I have tried it both ways. When you prune out most of the old canes and low to the ground you get more new canes and larger blossoms. Best Lawn on the Block! - 1:53 p.m. 2/24/2009
There are only a few basic rules to follow to have a nice green lawn. The number one rule is to mow the grass really high. Two inches or more. Number two, water infrequently and deeply. About twice a week is plenty. Get a rod and stick it in the ground. When it goes in fairly easily to 6 to 8 inches it is enough water. Less is not good because it causes the roots to be to close to the surface. Let the lawn dry out a few days and do it again. Less water in the long run but a healthier lawn. Almost no one does that because they set the sprinklers to sprinkle for a short while each day. Bad! Thirdly a regular fertilizer schedule. Scotts has a four step method that works very well. Spring, early summer, early fall and late fall. It is a little expensive but worth every penny. It is also good to use a mulching mower and leave the clippings on the lawn. If you follow these simple rules your lawn will be the envy of the neighborhood. I guarantee it.

Hi there. I have been home sick with a cold so have been spending some time outside in the sunshine "detailing" the paths around the veggie garden. There are gravel and during the fall and winter months, they fill up with pine needles, leaves and very small weeds. It's warm out in the sun and I'm enjoying the therapy. An added bonus;getting those little weeds now saves so much time later in the summer.

I planted some of Benno's tulips in pots ...the ones on my covered patio are already up 6 inches or more, the rest are still sleeping, but this will give me extended color from the tulips and some early blooms! THis forum is a great idea, and I love the tips about sweet peas! THanks Noel! Vivian

Sweet peas culture. - 8:40 p.m. 2/19/2009
I like to wrap the sweet pea seeds in a paper towel, soak towel and all with warm water, put in a plastic store bag and store in a warm spot for a couple days. When they begin to sprout just a little, I plant them in the ground. It is not at all too early to plant them. I have even planted them in the fall and had them grow.

I will be able to use it when we return from Arizona as I am sure I will have a few questions about my garden when I return - if it is still there! Spring planting and flowers. - 4:18 p.m. 2/19/2009
Planted bush peas and sweet peas Feb. 18, 2009. First crocus bloomed February 17, 2009. Birds we have around now are robins, juncos, varied thrushes, black capped chicadees, spotted towhees, chestnut backed chickadees, scrub jays, stellar jays, nuthatches and crows to name a few. Now is the time to get your peas in the ground. I have not found set onions in the stores yet. I will plant some as soon as they are avaiable. Any questions?
