Woodland Library: Not Just for Kids

When you think of the library, maybe you think of storytimes and picture books, a colorful and comfortable place for little children. But take another look: the Woodland Community Library is a great place for grownups, too. Whether you're looking for a good read, practical help for your hobby, your health or your career, or just answers to questions, you can find it at your library--all with friendly, professional service, and never a late fee.

Woodland has just added a new adult book discussion group, "Good Evening Reads," to its regular schedule. The new group meets in the library at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. "Good Evening Reads" has its kick-off on December 6 with the book The Conjurer's Bird, by Martin Davies. With a little history, a little mystery, and a little romance, this absorbing tale has something for everyone. You can sign out a copy for free from the library's service desk. On January 10 "Good Evening Reads" will discuss Garlic and Sapphires, a memoir from New York Times food critic Ruth Reichl. Older teens are welcome to join in this evening discussion.

The daytime Book Discussion Group meets on the third Wednesdays of the month at 10:00 a.m. in the library. This lively group will be discussing Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews and Christians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain on December 19, and the historical novel The Coffee Trader by David Liss on January 16. Ask for a copy at the library service desk.

A new Writers Circle creative support group had its start in October, and meets again on November 29. The Writers Circle gathers on the last Thursday of each month, 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the Community Center next door to the library. If you write poetry, songs, short stories or novels, join this group for writing exercises and a chance to share your work each month. Regular meetings begin January 31, after taking a break in December for the holidays.

The Narrative Knitters knitting circle got started last Spring after a series of "Knitting 101" classes. Everyone is welcome to bring their knitting or other needlework, and get tips from expert members. Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of each month, 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the library. November saw another round of "Knitting 101" on Tuesday nights, with an eager crowd filling all the tables. All ages are welcome to build new skills together. The next Narrative Knitters meetings will be held on November 27, and then January 29. The library looks forward to holding additional knitting classes, including an Intermediate series, probably in January--keep an eye out for the flyers around town (and in the library, of course).

The Woodland library also offers free “Introduction to the Internet” classes twice a month. Experienced instructors provide personalized guidance for using the World Wide Web, with plenty of time to practice and explore. Stop by the library to sign up for a slot, or call 225-2115. Classes are held in the library on the second Monday morning, 9:00-11:00 a.m., or the fourth Monday evening, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Upcoming dates include November 26, December 10, January 14 and January 28.
